thaipoosum cavadee

In Mauritius we celebrate many festivals. The thaipoosum cavadee is the most important. It is celebrated in the month of January. It is celebrated tor the lord of Muruga. The day of thaipoosum cavadee is a puclic holiday. The devotees fast for ten days. . They eat only vegetarian foods. And when they go at the kovil, they sing many devotional songs and pray. One day before the festival they construct the cavadee, they need bamboo, coconut leaves, colourful flowers, pink cloth, decorations, the photo of muruga and bells. The last day when the cavadee is celebrated, very early in the morning, they go at the riverside. Then they pray with the cavadee. And then they put milk in 2 samboos and attach it to the cavadee. They pierce their tongue and their body with needles. A few devotees attach their mouth with a pink cloth. Then they put their cavadess on their shoulders. While the pilgrims make their route they say ‘ arogara’, ‘ vel vel muruga’ loudly. Then when they reach the kovil, the priest, takes out the needles or the cloths, then they enter the kovil. Then the priest take the devotees’ samboos and pour the milk on the statue of Muruga. Then they thank the God for giving them courage. They share a little of the milk to all the people who are in the kovil. Then they go home. The next day they come once  again to pray.
